Everyone has the need to beautify themselves and that is always a legitimate need. However, how to beautify yourself and "beautify" nature, the surrounding environment, whether it is a difficult question?
Actually, this is not a difficult thing to do. Let HOC reveal to you 6 tips to beautify sustainable Zero Waste lifestyle!
1. Try natural & eco ingredients
Buying more natural ingredient-packed products is good news all around – it means fewer harmful chemicals going down the plughole when you shower or wash your face and, subsequently, leached into our water system, and to our food & water source. If you can afford it, go for products with certification such as ECOCERT, BIO, USDA Organic – these products contain at least 75-95% natural and 70% certified organic ingredients. There are also amazing local skincare and cosmetic products, contain only herbal and natural ingredients but without the certificates (due to high certification cost). However extra cautious and only purchase from reputable brands to avoid sub-standard or even unsafe products.
2. Support cruelty free brand
We have humane in the name of our specie: human being. We can be kinder to ourselves, and also kinder to animal. Think about it, how could any product developed from tremendous stress, suffering and extreme pain to any creature, help us to be more beautiful? With the advance of technology, it is not just unnecessary but really cruel to still test on animals. So, look for product with Vegan, Cruelty Free stamp.
3. Beat the microbeads
Tiny particles of plastic have been added to possibly thousands of personal care products sold around the world. They have been found in scrubs, shampoo, body wash, moisturizer, make-up, sunscreen, toothpaste and other cosmetic products. These microbeads, hardly visible to the naked eye, flow straight from the bathroom drain into the sewer system. Wastewater treatment plants are not designed to filter out microbeads and that is the main reason why, ultimately, they contribute to the plastic soup swirling around the world’s oceans. Sea creatures absorb or eat microbeads. These microbeads are passed along the marine food chain. Since humans are ultimately at the top of this food chain, it is likely that we are also absorbing microbeads from the food we eat. Microbeads are not biodegradable and once they enter the marine environment, they are impossible to remove. Look for Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and Nylon (PA) in the ingredient list.
Swap to products with natural beads such as green bean powder, rice bran, they are gentler on your skin and even exfoliate better with inbuilt healing properties.
4. Go plastic free
Look around in your bathroom and see how many of your products are in plastic bottles? Once empty, they will end up in landfill or ocean and take hundreds to thousands of years to break down. Choose product with minimal packaging: a bar of soap rather than shower gel, herbal shampoo tea bag for shampoo bottle. Elect for greener, recyclable material such as ceramic, glass jar instead of plastic for your face wash;and make your next toothbrush a bamboo version.
5. Go big or go home
If you love the product, why not opt for the 240ml rather than the tiny 100ml ? Less waste is best.
6. Reuse & recycle
Repurpose that cute jar as flower vase or decoration. Make an oil diffuser from a perfume bottle. Don’t feel crafty? Then recycle, make sure to give them a good rinse and separate them out properly for recycling.
